Axolotl Care Guide
Axolotls are amazing, unique pets that require special care. This guide
will help you set up a healthy environment and keep your axolotl happy for
years.
1. Tank Setup
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for
one axolotl, add 10 gallons for each additional. - Water Depth: At least 10–12 inches deep.
- No Gravel: Only use fine sand or
bare-bottom; gravel can be swallowed and cause injury. - Hides: Provide caves or hides for them
to feel secure.
2. Water Quality
- Temperature: 60–68°F (16–20°C).
- Filtration: Use a gentle filter (sponge
filter or baffled HOB). - Dechlorinate: Always treat tap water with
water conditioner. - Water Tests: Keep ammonia/nitrite at 0;
nitrates under 40 ppm.
3. Feeding
- Juveniles: Daily, small amounts
(earthworms, pellets, bloodworms). - Adults: 2–3 times per week.
- Best Foods:
- Nightcrawlers or earthworms
- High-quality axolotl pellets
- Frozen/thawed bloodworms or
brine shrimp (treat only)
4. Handling
- Avoid handling unless necessary.
Axolotls have delicate skin and should stay in the water as much as
possible.
5. Health Tips
- If your axolotl stops eating,
floats constantly, or develops fungus (white fuzzy spots), contact an
exotic vet or message us for guidance. - Keep tank cool and clean; stress
leads to illness.
